A NEW fire safety business operating in Cairns is making fire safety compliance easier by offering on site staff training.

With more than 44 years in the fire industry – including time with the Queensland and New Zealand fire service – Royd Kennedy has recently expanded Safety On Site Services to include safety compliance previously only offered by Brisbane-based firms.

He estimated 90 per cent of Cairns businesses weren’t State Government fire safety compliant. “But it’s not an insurmountable problem. I don’t expect people to down tools and go to a seminar and waste a day. I go to you,” he said.

“I bring my presentation and live fire tug and safety gear. I inspect the premises, train the staff and do all the documentation at a fraction of the cost of those from Brisbane.”

The SOS managing director is a qualified trainer and emergency response co-ordinator who has worked in Qatar and been a fire safety adviser to the UN while in Bosnia.

Previous clients serviced by SOS include Wilmar Sugar, Exxon Mobil PNG, FNQ Plastics and the Quicksilver group.

“I do evacuation training and write evacuation procedures, business audits and building compliance, signage and anything that relates to fire safety regulations,” he said.
